South West Herts grammar schools

What HA4/HA5 families need to know about the South West Herts Consortium's seven partially selective schools, the tests each one uses, and where Queens' School's HA5 priority area actually reaches.

The South West Herts Schools Consortium is a different system entirely from Buckinghamshire's — it isn't a set of grammar schools in the traditional sense, but seven partially selective schools that share a common test and admissions process. Most of each school's intake is genuinely comprehensive (allocated by distance and siblings, like any other secondary), with only a minority of places — typically 25–35% — set aside for children who sit and qualify on the shared Academic Ability Test.

Two schools in the consortium name HA5 directly in their admission area. Watford Grammar School for Boys and Watford Grammar School for Girls both list HA5 1–5 — the whole postcode district — in their published "Rest of the Admission Area." Queens' School in Bushey has a narrower priority area that covers HA5 3 and HA5 4 specifically. The other four schools' admission areas don't reach into Harrow or Hillingdon postcodes at all.

Before you read further: admissions policies, priority areas and historical scores are set independently by each school and by the Consortium, and can change year to year. This page reflects our current understanding — always confirm details directly with the SW Herts Consortium (swhertsschools.org.uk) or the individual school before making a decision as significant as a house move.

Priority postcodes, school by school

Four schools have named priority/admission-area postcodes we've confirmed directly from their own published policies. Two — St Clement Danes and Croxley Danes — publish "priority area" test scores but we haven't been able to source the actual postcode list from a primary document; we've flagged those rather than guess.

Only Watford Grammar Boys/Girls and Queens' name Harrow (HA) postcodes. Parmiter's, Rickmansworth and St Clement Danes all explicitly confirm no HA postcodes in their priority areas — worth knowing so you're not chasing a route that isn't there.

Open day timing differs from state comprehensives. Where our primary/secondary directories show open evenings clustering in autumn (September–October), the one Consortium open day we've got a confirmed date for — Parmiter's, 25 June 2026 — falls at the end of the summer term instead, well before the September Academic Ability Test. That fits the Consortium's own timeline: registration opens 1 April and closes in early June, so a late-June open day lands right after registration closes but before testing — a genuinely different rhythm to plan around if you're used to autumn open evenings. We've only confirmed this one date so far; if you find open day dates for the other six schools, we'll build this into a fuller comparison.

How the Consortium system works

The seven schools jointly run a single Academic Ability Test, sat in September of Year 6, covering just maths and verbal reasoning. This is narrower than a traditional 11+ — there's no English or non-verbal reasoning component, which the Consortium itself is explicit about: this is not a full 11+ test. Registration runs for around ten weeks each spring (1 April to early June for the following September's entry) via the Consortium's own parent portal, separate from the standard Hertfordshire secondary transfer application.

There is also a separate, optional Music Aptitude Test for children applying under each school's music criterion, and — uniquely — a Sports Aptitude Test (a Eurofit physical fitness assessment) that only applies to Queens' School. No other consortium school offers a sport-based route in.

There is no fixed pass mark. Each school sets its own minimum standardised score every year, based on how many places it has and how many qualifying children apply — and that minimum can vary significantly by school and by a child's priority postcode. In 2024, the range across all seven schools' academic-route cut-offs ran from 186 to 245, illustrating how much this varies school to school rather than being one shared bar.

Watford Grammar Schools: HA5 1–5 named directly

Watford Grammar School for Boys and Watford Grammar School for Girls run matching admissions policies. Both split their admission area into two zones — the "Watford Area" and the "Rest of the Admission Area" — and both explicitly list HA5 1–5 (all of it, not a sub-district) inside the Rest of the Admission Area, alongside HA3 6, HA6 1–3 and HA7 3–4.

65% of places at each school are "community places," allocated by straight-line distance within the whole admission area (Watford Area and Rest of the Admission Area treated as one zone for this purpose) — so an HA5 address is eligible, but is competing against everyone else in a wide catchment, and Watford itself will usually win on distance. The remaining 35% are "specialist places" split 60:40 between the two zones — so of that 35%, 40% (roughly 14% of all Year 7 places) is specifically reserved for children in the Rest of the Admission Area, HA5 included, split further between academic ability and music aptitude.

The realistic read: an HA5 address makes a family eligible to apply and to be considered under the Rest-of-Admission-Area specialist quota, but it's still one address among many across a wide zone (also including WD3, WD4, WD5, WD6, WD7, HA3 6, HA6, HA7) — not a small, tightly targeted priority area the way Queens' HA5 3/4 slice is. Watford Grammar Boys is Outstanding (Oct 2021); Watford Grammar Girls is described as Outstanding by multiple sources but we couldn't confirm the inspection date from a primary source.

Queens' School: a narrower HA5 3/4 priority area

Queens' School's priority area is smaller and more specific than Watford's — it names HA5 3\*\* and HA5 4\*\* only (not the whole HA5 district), alongside HA6, HA3 6, HA7 3/4 and a set of WD postcodes. It's also the only consortium school with a Sports Aptitude Test.

Queens' School in Bushey is the only one of the seven with a priority area reaching into Harrow postcodes. Its published admissions criteria name the following priority postcodes: WD3–7, WD17–19, WD23–25, AL2 (south of the M25), HA6, HA5 3**, HA5 4**, HA3 6**, HA7 3**, HA7 4**. In practice, that means a family in the HA5 3 or HA5 4 postcode sub-districts (parts of Pinner/Hatch End) sits inside Queens' priority area in a way no other consortium school offers.

Queens' Published Admission Number is 270. Once looked-after children and children with an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school are placed, remaining places for children in the priority postcodes are allocated in this order:

Ofsted rated Queens' Outstanding across all areas at its March 2025 inspection. It's a co-educational academy on Aldenham Road, Bushey, WD23 2TY, with a stated specialism in science and sport.

The seven Consortium schools

Watford Grammar Boys/Girls and Queens' have HA5-reaching admission areas — the other four are included here for completeness, since some HA4/HA5 families do still apply from further afield on the strength of a high Academic Ability Test score.

2026-entry test scores: read with real caution

The Consortium publishes each school's lowest qualifying score from the most recent entry year, and is explicit that these are not pass marks — a child who beats last year's lowest score has no guarantee of a place this year, because it depends entirely on how many other children apply and qualify in that specific year. The figures below are for entry in 2026 (tests sat autumn 2025), the most recent full cycle. Registration volumes have run at roughly 3,900–4,150 children a year across 2022–2024, giving a sense of how much competition sits behind these numbers.

PAN = Published Admission Number, the total Year 7 places at that school. Percentages show what share of PAN is reserved for each route (the remainder goes by distance/community places). Watford Boys/Girls, Parmiter's and Rickmansworth split their academic/music quota into a priority zone and an outer zone, with a materially higher bar in the outer zone — worth noting since HA5 sits in Watford's "Area B (Outer)," the harder of its two bands.

A note on scope: this page is about the mechanics of the SW Herts Consortium system, not a recommendation to apply or move. Watford Grammar Boys/Girls and Queens' School are the three with a genuine HA4/HA5 pathway; the other four have no meaningful priority reach into Harrow or Hillingdon postcodes. Even within the three, distance and the specific quota (community vs. specialist places) still decide most outcomes — this isn't a guaranteed route in. See our Grammar Routes page for how this compares to Buckinghamshire and the other out-of-area options.
